Tips for covering afro hair
June 20, 2013

Question

I saw a question here about women of African heritage who have trouble covering their hair. In my experience, there is no need to fret or have short hair. I am mostly African American heritage and have had natural/fro hair for more than 10 years, which is past my shoulders. Moisture is key and sticking to silky/slippy fabrics for hair covering. I never have my hair loose at any time underneath my scarves, but wear it in twists. Great oils for afro hair need to be heavy – Shea, castor oil, coconut. There are some great websites like Black girls with long hair, Curly Nikki, and other natural hair sites for African Americans. Hair also must be covered in silk or sleep on silk/satin pillowcases. Most of us have very thick afro hair and can even grow to waist length which is my goal.
