Unexpected blood on first-day bedikah
September 7, 2023

Question

I performed a hefsek tahara last night (Wednesday night) and had a clean moch at tzait hakochavim. This morning my bedika had red on it roughly the size of a quarter. Usually my periods are over after 5 days. My period started Shabbat afternoon. Do I need to re–do a hefsek tonight? Thank you!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
Even a small spot of red or another niddah color typically invalidates a bedikah and the clean days that preceded it, even if a period otherwise seems to be over. Based on your description, you do need to make a new hefsek taharah.
The exception would be if you could establish that there was a non-uterine source to which the bleeding could be attributed.
Sometimes little variations in someone’s health or stress levels can affect the cycle as you describe. Even so, if you have experienced unusual discomfort or have difficulty with your next attempt at a hefsek taharah, you may wish to see a physician or a bodeket taharah (a nurse trained in these matters) to evaluate whether you have a non-uterine source of bleeding.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
