Spotting on clean days

Question

I am having a problem and i was hoping you could help me.

For the first time in my life I had. twice within the last 6-7 months, staining during my 7 clean days. I get a few specks of blood that are bound with whitish-yellowish mucus and after wiping it is gone. This time I was so shocked because I got all ready at home for the mikvah and when I got there to shower – there it was! it was on my white underwear.

I wear white underwear specifically on my 7 clean days.

I spoke to my doctor and he said that it is perfectly normal that my body is changing as I age. When I explained my problem and asked are there any vitamins or other changes that I could make to stop this from happening he said he did not have any advice.

I appreciate any suggestions or advice that you may have.

I am also wondering if each time this happens I must start counting 7 days again?

thank you for your much appreciated help.

Answer

We’re sorry to hear of your difficulty becoming tehorah. Not all stains make you niddah. See our article on ketamim for further details. These leniencies apply even during the clean days and, if applicable, you would be able to continue counting.

If your stains were small (less than the size of a dime or a shekel), and were found externally (not on a bedikah), they would not invalidate your clean days. If they do not satisfy this or other conditions for leniency laid out in the ketamim article, than you would indeed have to make a new hefsek taharah and count seven more days. If the problem continues, please get back to us with more details. There are both halachic and medical interventions that can be applied when needed.

You may want to refer your physician to the section of our website designed for medical professionals, Jewish Women’s Health, written to help medical professionals understand the concerns observant Jewish women and provide optimal care.
