Pantiliners for comfort on clean days
May 15, 2009

Question

Is there a pantiliner that is acceptable during the 7 clean days? I have days where I have a lot of clear discharge and it is uncomfortable to walk around with “wet” underwear. Thanks.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

We understand that pantyliners can be important for comfort on days with heavy discharge.

The purpose of white underwear during the seven clean days is to confirm the absence of bleeding. If a stain larger than a gris (the size of a US dime or Israeli shekel) is found on white underwear, it invalidates the clean days. According to many halachic authorities, stains found on disposable pantyliners do not meet the halachic criteria for ketamim (stains), and would not invalidate the clean days, so that wearing disposable pantyliners would seem to undermine the purpose of wearing white during the clean days.

Furthermore, there are various opinions among halachic authorities regarding what to do if a stain is found on a pantyliner during the clean days.

For both these reasons, it is best to avoid using disposable pantyliners during the seven clean days.

On the other hand, sometimes there is a significant need for pantyliners, either for comfort as you describe, or when a woman experiences frequent staining and has difficulty completing the clean days. We follow the position that white disposable pantyliners are permissible in such situations, and that a stain found on a disposable pantyliner can be disregarded and does not invalidate the clean days.

Still, if it works for you, a preferable alternative would be reusable white cotton pantyliners, which are halachically equivalent to white underwear and present no halachic problems. Undyed cotton is considered a shade of white.
