Heavy staining with Mirena
January 7, 2016

Question

Hi, I recently had the Mirena IUD inserted. I stained for a couple of weeks and then was able to get to the mikvah. I was clean for a couple of weeks and now have some spotting. I’ve been trying to not look at toilet paper and I only wear colored underwear. My question is at what point do I determine my status as Nidah and at what point do I just call it staining? It is much lighter than a regular period – however still a nice amount of blood. Thanks

Answer

It is fairly common for women with Mirena to experience staining for months after insertion, and it can be difficult to differentiate between heavy staining and a light flow.

Staining can still be considered staining even when it persists over time. A typical rule of thumb to differentiate between staining and flow is whether a woman feels she needs to use significant protection such as a pad. If a single pantiliner would be enough to easily contain the bleeding over the course of a day, that would be considered staining.

Based on your description, that what you have is “much lighter than a regular period”, we would treat your situation as one of staining.

You may want to discuss with your physician the possibility of taking ibuprofen or bioflavonoids, which can reduce the incidence of staining.
