I am mesader kedushin for a wedding. The day of the wedding will be day 7 for the bride. She has been told that she may immerse in the mikveh before the chupah, but there are two questions:
May the groom put the ring on the bride’s finger under the chupah?
Will they need yichud after tzeit ha-kochavim?
Answer
Mazal tov!
In general, the chuppah should ideally take place after nightfall in this situation so that the kallah is already fully tehorah.
However, based on your description it seems that the chuppah will be before sunset. If this is the case, the chatan may place the ring on the kallah’s finger, but they should not hold hands as they walk down the aisle after the ceremony.
If possible, yichud should only take place after nightfall. If it will be before nightfall, then some children should be present in the yichud room as in a chuppat niddah. Alternatively, if the witnesses to yichud are aware of the situation, then the door to the yichud room can be left ajar, or the door can be left unlocked, and the witnesses can be instructed to discreetly open it every few minutes and look in.
Please feel free to get back to us with any further questions.
