Contraception before divorce
October 22, 2014

Question

Am I allowed to take birth control tablets if my marriage is not working out and on the verge of divorce/separating and I don't want to become pregnant. Do I need to ask a rav or can I just go ahead with it and take tablets till I leave my husband?

Answer

We are sorry to hear of the difficulties in your marriage. In this case, use of birth control is permissible.

Divorce is a very serious matter. If you haven't already, we urge you to see a qualified counseling professional, as a couple or alone. Sometimes even a seemingly hopeless situation can improve with appropriate help. When a marriage cannot be saved, proper counseling can help improve the divorce process. A directory of religious counselors is available through Nefesh: The International Network of Orthodox Mental Health Professionals.
