Asking every month about similar colors
May 8, 2013

Question

Hi and thanks again for a wonderful resource.

I've been married 8 months and almost every month so far I've taken a bedika cloth to a yoetzet, usually a hefsek tahara or first day check which is brown, and almost always she has ruled that it is ok.

Firstly, do most new brides ask so many times?

Secondly, if I am seeing the same colours every month, do I need to keep on asking, or can I just rely on the fact that it was acceptable previously?

Answer

Mazal tov on your recent marriage!

It is quite common for new brides to have frequent questions about stains and different shades of colors. As you gain more experience you will have a clearer understanding of which colors are acceptable and which still need to be brought for& evaluation.

When the yoetzet rules that a color is acceptable, ask her whether you should continue to show her bedikot with that color in the future, or whether you can now evaluate them for yourself. Some "borderline" colors may always require the expertise of a rav or a yoetzet. Other colors may be clearly acceptable. For these, you can rely on the previous rulings you received, if you are sure it is the same hue and shade.
