Inadvertently laundered questionable bedikah
November 12, 2012

Question

Thank you so much for your wonderful service.

I left out the bedikah cloths from my hefsek taharah (Sunday) and this morning's bedikah (Monday) because I was unsure if the morning bedikah was good. My husband inadvertently tossed them into the laundry, which I then inadvertently washed. The Monday morning bedikah was, I am pretty sure, fine – just three small specks of a dark brown. But, I'm not sure and now cannot take the bedikah to the rav. Is there any way to permit me to go to mikveh Sunday night, or do I need to wait until Monday night? The afternoon bedikah on Monday was good and I did a moch, which was also fine – so at most we are out one day. I forgot to do a moch on Sunday night, if it matters.

Thank you so much.

Answer

When a bedikah cloth with questionable stains is lost (or discarded, laundered, etc.), we must assume the stains on it were problematic, since there is now no way to check if they were acceptable. Unfortunately, unless you are certain that the stains on the morning bedikah were acceptable, you must assume your clean days were invalidated. Your afternoon bedikah from Monday counts as your new hefsek taharah and your immersion is postponed one day, to next Monday night.
