Bleeding from cyst
August 30, 2004

Question

Hello,
I had a small cyst, following my giving birth three months ago, which prevented me from having any relations with my husband.
My doctor said that the cyst was very small; he extracted it but said it wasn't the problem.
That was 3 weeks ago. But for the past 10 days, the cyst – or another one – was growing rapidly and made it difficult to simply sit or walk…
Last night I decided to take a look at it to see how big it had gotten… I touched it and I started bleeding…
I am breastfeeding full-time so I was wondering what this was about… so I did not touch my husband but did not pronounce myself niddah, I wanted to speak to my doctor and to a rabbi.
I called up my doctor and he told me that the cyst probably "burst open" (which explains also why I barely feel the cyst today) and that I should take antibiotics. He said he didnt think it was my period considering all of this and considering that I am breastfeeding
Now, you guessed it, my question is AM I or AM I NOT??? Do I have to see a doctor to determine it? Please help. Thanks.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Bleeding from a vaginal cyst does not render you niddah because the source of the blood is not the uterus. Since the bleeding occurred immediately after touching the cyst, and your doctor believes that this caused the bleeding, that is sufficient to attribute the bleeding to the cyst. You don’t need to be further examined by a doctor. As you say, it is also not likely to be your period since you are only a few months after giving birth and fully breastfeeding, which is further evidence that the bleeding was likely caused by the cyst.

Please feel free to write back with any further questions. Refuah Shleimah!
