Bleeding from polyp during pregnancy
November 14, 2023

Question

A pregnant woman is experiencing very slight bleeding occasionally, more often a ketem. According to the gynecologist, it comes from a polyp. Is she then nidda?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
Whether bleeding from a polyp can make a woman niddah depends on the polyp’s location: Bleeding from a uterine polyp can make a woman niddah, because the bleeding may be hormonal. With a cervical polyp, this depends where it is on the cervix. There may be room for leniency with a uterine polyp that extends into the cervix. (These would usually be visible with a speculum examination.)
Even when bleeding from a polyp could theoretically make a woman niddah, the leniencies of stains still apply. Therefore, we would need more information about the bleeding to be able to assess it – its amount, color, where it has been found, and under what circumstances – taking the pregnancy into account. Please see our pages on stains and toilet paper for more information, then get back to us with more details.
We also recommend that women with cervical polyps (or polyps extending into the cervix) take special care to be gentle with bedikot, only going as deep as the first knuckle.
Please don’t hesitate to follow up. Besha’ah tovah!
