Bleeding from tubal ligation
January 20, 2017

Question

I am having a tubal ligation done. I have a psak from a well known Rabbi, so the ligation is not an issue.

After the procedure, I will have bleeding from the tubes being cut that will go from the tubes, through my uterus and cervix.

Does this render me a Niddah? Do I need to count my usual 5 days, then seven clean days then go to mikvah?

Answer

Bleeding associated with the procedure is dam makkah, blood from a wound, and not dam niddah. However, its effect on your status will depend on a few factors.

If the procedure is done while you are niddah, before you have done a hefsek taharah, you will not be able to begin the clean days until you have an acceptable hefsek taharah. Blood of a niddah color would invalidate a hefsek taharah, even if it seems to be from the procedure.

If the procedure is done during the clean days, you will be able to attribute bleeding to the procedure for the first few days. In general, you would omit bedikot after the procedure, and perform a bedikah on the seventh clean day. If necessary, please get back to us for specific guidance.

If you are tehorah at the time of the procedure, bleeding during the first few days could be attributed to the procedure and would not make you niddah. If bleeding overlaps with a veset day, you would seek further halachic guidance.

Please write back with any further questions.
