Blood in urine from UTI
March 10, 2008

Question

I'm about 9 weeks pregnant and I developed a urinary tract infection over the weekend. I noticed blood in my urine which can probably be attributed to the UTI. Although I didn't get my results back from the lab yet, the doctor said that the primary test showed that there was blood in my urine. Can I safely assume that I'm not niddah?

Answer

When it is clear that bleeding is from a urinary tract infection (UTI), then it does not render a woman niddah. If it could be from the UTI, then the answer depends on where a woman is in her "halachic cycle" (e.g. during the shivah neki'im or after the mikveh).

Given that you are pregnant and that your doctor has identified your bleeding as non-uterine, you may indeed assume that you are not in niddah.
