Can I calculate my veset from ovulation?
April 19, 2023

Question

Hi. Although I do not generally track my ovulation, I do typically experience ovulation pain and my period comes two weeks later. Over time, this has proved to be the most reliable way for me to predict the start of my next period and has been more reliable than any of the onot that I calculate.
Given this situation, should I be calculating the onot in a different manner?
To clarify, I would have to pay attention more carefully to note if the start of the flow is always in the same time zone as the ovulation pain or the morning after – even with this missing information, however, this calculation has always proved most reliable.
Thank you!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
This is an excellent question, and you anticipated our response as well. Over the next few months, you would need to track the onset of your ovulation pain (daytime or nighttime and Hebrew date), as well as the onset of your flow. Once you have this information, we can see if it suffices to establish a veset haguf, a veset based on physical symptoms, and discuss what that means halachically.
Behatzlacha! And please do follow up.
