Can you breastfeed right after relations?
July 1, 2025

Question

Hi! I wanted to know, if one is breastfeeding, can a baby be nursed right after relations, or is there a certain amount of time that needs to be waited? Thank you!

Answer

The Mishna Brura (240:54) quotes a kabbalistic concern in the name of the Zohar that one should refrain from breastfeeding for a period of time after finishing intercourse. Some halachic authorities follow the opinion of the Zohar in this matter, some treat it merely as advice, and many opinions do not require any period of separation at all.

Therefore if it causes you any difficulty, and certainly if your baby is crying, you may suffice with the brief amount of time it takes you to go from your bed to pick up your baby as a sufficient waiting period.
