Can’t get perfectly clear hefsek
December 1, 2014

Question

I can't seem to get a perfectly "clear" hefsek tahara. I have stopped bleeding but any time I try for one it comes out with a light brown stain on the cloth. The color of the stain seems to me the same color that I had previously asked a rav (a few years ago) and he had said was clean. It is purely light brown, no red, kind of yellowish. If I had seem this stain on a regular bedikah I would say I would remain clean.

Can I assume this is an ok color for a Hefsek Tahara as well? It has been two days now and this color seems to be a norm for me now… I have stopped bleeding 3 days ago. No one local to show the stain to as we have moved. If I wait another day or two (or more…) I would assume it would eventually come out completely clear. Thanksץ

Answer

The hefsek taharah (as well as the bedikot during the seven clean days) need not be completely clear. Stains that are yellow or light brown (the color of coffee with milk) with no reddish hue are acceptable and do not invalidate the hefsek or bedikah. Other shades should be brought to a halachic authority for evaluation. If you wish to share your location with us, we can try to help you find someone who is trained to evaluate bedikot.
