Copper IUD, staining for a week before period
October 27, 2016

Question

I have been using a copper IUD for birth control since my daughter was born 18 months ago. My menstrual cycle returned at 10 months postpartum. The last 3 months I have experienced heavy staining/light bleeding for the entire week before my period begins with its normal heavy flow. This has reduced my tahara time to less than 2 weeks each cycle. What should I be doing to ensure I am not making myself nidda unnecessarily early before my period begins? Is this something I should approach my doctor about?

Answer

We are sorry to hear of your recent prolonged bleeding.

From a halachic standpoint, it is important to review the laws of stains, as by reviewing our site’s articles “Stains” and “Toilet Paper“.  It is likely that you have been considering yourself niddah earlier than necessary.

On the medical front, given that this is a new development after eighteen months without difficulty, we do recommend discussing the matter with your physician. He or she may find it helpful to refer to the section of our website designed for healthcare professionals, Jewish Women’s Health.
