Disposable cotton pantyliners
June 2, 2023

Question

Thank you so much for such a comprehensive website. I have found it very helpful.

I know that normal disposable liners are not mekabel tumah, but there are now many products on the market that are cotton instead of the synthetic materials that most disposable liners are made out of. Many people like these products since they are free of chemicals, bleach, plastics, and other ingredients. Are disposable 100% cotton liners mekabel tumah since they are cotton? Or are they not mekabel tumah since they are still disposable?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

The basic halacha is that raw or unwoven cotton is not susceptible to ritual impurity (mekabel tumah). Disposable pads or liners that include cotton are generally non-woven and thus, stains on them may be treated as stains on a surface that is not mekabel tumah.

However, as a matter of stringency, it would be best to avoid white disposable products with cotton and use either synthetic pads and liners or colored cotton pads or liners. Many reusable pads and liners on the market come in colored varieties.
