Episiotomy bleeding during clean days
December 4, 2014

Question

I am 5 weeks postpartum, have managed to get a clean hefsek, and am now counting my clean days. I had an episiotomy and stitches after the birth and it seems like I am still healing from that as I have a visible wound at the entrance of my vagina that keeps reopening and bleeding slightly. My question is, if I see bright blood on my white underwear and on toilet paper, can I safely assume it comes from the wound and is not uterine? I have already been advised to limit bedikot to days 1,4 and 7 but this does not overcome the issue of white underwear.

Answer

Mazal tov on the birth of your baby!

In this situation, you may wear white pantiliners during this set of clean days. Stains on pantiliners may be treated leniently and, in combination with your known episiotomy bleeding, allow you to disregard stains during the clean days.

When a woman clearly has a vaginal wound or lesion, blood on toilet paper may also be disregarded.

If you see that the wound is bleeding on day 4, it is advisable to omit that day's bedikah until you have healed more. If you feel the area is improving and less sensitive, you can try to perform a bedikah on another one of the middle days. Your day 7 bedikah is critical, and cannot be omitted, so try to do the bedikah especially carefully and slowly, with a slightly damp bedikah cloth.
