Heavy staining around ovulation
May 4, 2016

Question

Hi and thanks in advance. After four kids I’ve started bleeding during ovulation. This month it started on Shabbat and is still going on on Wednesday. It is not a flow but is significant staining. It was very minor at first and I even went to the Mikva Monday night. But then it started up in a problematic manner Tuesday morning. I’m not sure what to do once it stops.

Answer

Your next step depends on your niddah status. If your renewed staining made you niddah, then you will have to observe the full five day wait (starting from when you became niddah) followed by seven clean days and another immersion. If it did not make you niddah, no further measure is necessary to resume relations.

We cannot assess your status without more details about the nature of your staining, specifically its quantity, color, and where and how it has been found.

Although some staining around the time of ovulation is fairly common, significant bleeding and new patterns deserve medical evaluation. To help your physician understand the impact they are having on you, you may wish to refer him or her to the section of our website designed for medical professionals, Jewish Women’s Health.
