IUD insertion on mikveh day
14/07/2024

Question

Hi! I'm scheduled to have my 6–week postpartum visit on the same day that I expect to go to the mikvah. I'd like to have an IUD inserted. May I do a bedikah, have the IUD inserted, and then go to the mikvah that night? If I experience spotting that day, may I still go to the mikvah that night but delay having sex until the spotting stops?

Answer

Mazal tov on the recent birth of your baby!
Yes, you should perform your morning bedikah for day 7 of the clean days before your appointment, and omit the afternoon bedikah.
If you are spotting lightly after the IUD insertion you may immerse that night. If you are bleeding more heavily, you still may immerse that night but you may feel more comfortable waiting a day or two to immerse until the bleeding slows down. Even if you delay immersion, no further bedikot are required and you should change to colored underwear .
Even though the spotting is due to trauma and is not dam niddah, we do advise abstaining from intercourse until the staining subsides.
