Light brown on hefsek, same color as last time
March 30, 2016

Question

I had a very light brown – I would call it tan – spot on my hefsek taharah last Friday night, moments before sundown. I couldn't do a Moch Dahuk because we were staying with friends and had to rush out to shul (I usually lay low/lie down if possible until I can take it out but couldn't in this situation). The next day and all following days (so far) have been clean.

The question: Can I go to the mikveh this Friday night?

A few other facts:
– I have only been married for a few months so am still new to checking.
– I did have a light brown stain checked last month and I was told it didn't render me niddah. The stain on the hefsek was the same color.
– I didn't save the hefsek taharah cloth (will next time).
– This probably doesn't matter but I have to leave my husband for two weeks starting Saturday night at midnight and would be so so grateful if I could go to the mikveh on Friday night.

Thank you.

Answer

Mazal tov on your recent wedding!

A light brown with no hint of a reddish tint may be disregarded on a hefsek taharah or bedikah. If we understood correctly that this is what you saw, then you may indeed proceed with immersion as planned. (If we misunderstood, please get back to us with a clearer description of the exact shade.)

In the future, when you ask whether a color on a bedikah cloth is acceptable, you may want to ask whether you can now evaluate that color for yourself. While some "borderline" colors may always require the expertise of a halachic authority, other colors may be clearly acceptable. For these, you can rely on the previous rulings you received, if you are sure it is the same color shade.

You are correct to include details such as your husband's travel, since they can sometimes affect halachic determinations, especially in borderline cases.

Please write back with any further questions.
