Ocean as mikveh
December 17, 2002

Question

Hi - I am going to be in a city without a mikvah during the time I need it, but there is an ocean. I saw on the website that an ocean is permitted for mikvah, and that it is preferable to use a woman over 12 to watch. However, if only my husband is available to watch, are there any precautions besides those on the website? Are there any other special considerations for immersing in the ocean? Thanks a lot!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

It is halachically permitted to immerse in the ocean, as long as you can do so safely. As with any tevilah, all preparations should be done in an unhurried manner, in a lit room where you can check yourself properly.

Please see our page here for a discussion of the relevant halachot for an ocean immersion, and get back to us with any specific questions

As you note, it is preferable for a Jewish woman over age twelve to act as mikveh attendant. If no Jewish woman is available, your husband can observe the immersion. Since you will still be niddah until you have immersed, it is important to be especially careful with modesty. You should immerse wearing a loose robe or long t-shirt that allows the water to reach all parts of your body.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. B'hatzlacha!
