Onot when extending cycle
March 27, 2016

Question

Last cycle I had staining during my white days and had to go to Mikvah only 5 days before my next period is due. So I am taking, as a one off, hormonal pills to extend my cycle by a week.
My question is whether I must observe my onot and do bedikot this week on the days when I would have been due to get my period had I not been taking pills. I am worried they will not come out clear because I have the& copper IUD which often causes spotting. In the past when I have taken these pills they have worked as planned and I have gotten my period a few days after stopping. However it has been a while since I've used them.
Many thanks for your wonderful service.

Answer

Since you are taking (we presume) progesterone to delay your period, your bleeding this month is controlled by the pills and not by your natural cycle. Therefore you need not observe your scheduled onot and should separate only when you expect to begin bleeding after stopping the pills (usually from 2 days after the last pill).
