Question

I just read the Q&A entitled: "Onot perishah with long cycles." I was not previously aware that women with consistently long cycles only observe onat haflaga. I recently menstruated for the first time postpartum (I gave birth nearly 2 years ago). I referred to my pre-pregnancy vestot calendar and saw that my shortest cycle was 34 days (sometimes the cycles were 50 or more days and once it was around 80 days). All of this was over 2.5 years ago, though. Which vestot do I need to keep now?

Answer

Pregnancy and childbirth resets the veset calendar, and a woman does not follow her pre-pregnancy patterns in calculating veset days.

After 24 months postpartum, a woman may revert back to her pre-pregnancy veset kavua if it occurs once. However, in your case, the pattern of longer cycles that you had pre-pregnancy is not a classic veset kavua, and you would not immediately revert back to it if you experience a long haflagah only once or even twice.

For your next cycle, you will observe both the yom hachodesh (day of the month) and the onah beinonit (thirtieth day). For the following cycles, you will add observance of the haflagah (interval day). Once you have three consecutive cycles longer than 31 days, you can observe only the haflagah, unless or until you have another short cycle.

We hope this is clear. Please write back with any further questions.
