Red on bedikah – ovulation bleeding
September 2, 2014

Question

I did my hefsek on Friday with a very clean check. I noticed that on Sunday and today on Monday I started to have a thicker mucus discharge which might mean I am starting to ovulate. I did a bedikah this morning and it was absolutely clean and my underwear was very clean. When I did my bedikah before sundown there was a thin red line. I have heard that when one is ovulating there could be blood in the mucus. I proceeded to do a bedikah afterwards so that I could save today and it came out absolutely clean with out a doubt. Is it possible the blood is not coming from the uterine blood and that it is because of ovulation?

Ps. I will show the bedikah to a rav but I am sure that it will not be good.

Answer

While it is possible that the stain you saw on the bedikah cloth was indeed caused by the hormonal fluctuation of ovulation, it still may invalidate the clean days, since ovulation bleeding is uterine blood. Women who regularly experience ovulation bleeding that interrupts the clean days should consult with a rabbi or yoetzet for further guidance on successfully completing the clean days.

Be sure to bring the stain for evaluation, since often what may seem clearly red at first glance, may lighten/darken/change shade and may not actually be a problematic stain.
