Should I ask about hefsek?
April 22, 2016

Question

I am a newlywed and this was the first period in my marriage. At the end of my period (it was the 6th day), I performed a hefsek tahara last night and the color was a light brown. I learned that that is a questionable color. What is the ruling on this color? Am I still a niddah or am I able to begin the 7 clean days? I will do another hefsek tahara tonight but would like to know if I can start counting from last night.

Answer

Mazal tov on your recent marriage!

A light brown with no hint of a reddish tint is usually acceptable, even on a hefsek taharah. However, it would be best for you to show the cloth to a halachic authority and to ask if the shade on it needs be asked about in future. At the beginning of marriage it is particularly important to learn by asking questions.
