Tampon as moch
June 28, 2013

Question

I did a bedika a few hours before sunset on the fifth day of my cycle, because I was afraid I would miss doing a hefsek later. I then put a tampon in, because I didn't want to stain. I took the tampon out after nightfall. The bedika and tampon are both questionable colors. Should I ask a question on the colors? Could this be a valid hefsek/moch?

Also can I use a tampon in general for a moch? I find bedika cloths uncomfortable and they fall out anyway.

Answer

You should bring both the hefsek cloth and the tampon to a rabbi for evaluation if there are questionable stains on them. If the stains are acceptable, then your hefsek and moch are valid.

While the hefsek must be done with a cloth that can be maneuvered into all the vaginal crevices, the moch need not fulfill that requirement and just needs to fill up the vaginal canal. While it is preferable to use a bedikah cloth for a moch, you may use a tampon instead if it is more comfortable for you.
