Vesatot after intermittent postpartum bleeding
March 26, 2024

Question

I have a question about my vestos calendar. I had about four months of bleeding after baby with three weeks of clean during that time (I went to the Mikva and had about two weeks clean but then bled again for six weeks). Unsure what was a period or not doing that time because bleeding only stopped for that short while–do I just start my calendar from when I went to the Mikva the second time after baby when my cycle seemed to have started again?

Answer

Mazal tov on the recent birth of your baby!
It is unclear whether the second episode of bleeding was an actual period or a continuation of the postpartum bleeding, as it lasted for six weeks. Even if it was a period that requires observing vesatot, the yom hachodesh and onah benonit occurred during the six weeks you were still bleeding. Therefore you have no further onot to observe until you get your next period.
After your next period you should calculate the yom hachodesh and onah benonit as usual. Since there is doubt regarding the previous episode of bleeding, you will not calculate a yom haflagah based on the interval between this period and the questionable period. Only after the following period would you calculate all three onot.
