Blood in toilet water
December 15, 2008

Question

Hi, last night I saw a drop of blood floating in the water of the toilet (not on tissue).

I thought it was maybe a period but wasn’t so sure as there was no more blood and I’m also after my prisha days.

I’m also taking fertility drugs, like clomid and ovitrelle.

What’s the halacha when one sees blood in water?? What should I do??

Answer

Because water is not susceptible to ritual impurity, stains found in water do not render a woman niddah (please see our articles on stains for a more detailed explanation). Therefore, you are not halachically required to take any particular steps. However, we recommend abstaining from relations for a day from the staining in order to be sure that a flow does not begin during relations. This is a recommendation, and not a strict halachic requirement.
