Tisha B’Av with pregnancy complications
July 31, 2014

Question

I will be about 35 weeks pregnant on Tisha B'Av iy"H.

I had preterm contractions and spotting about three weeks ago and the doctor instructed me to drink a lot of powerade type beverages in addition to water as much and as often as possible. I have a two year old at home as well who was born a few weeks early. In addition, I am hypoglycemic and feel very ill when my blood sugar gets low. The doctor says I should not be fasting but I do not have a Rav I can ask to verify halachically. I don't know if this is a question you may be able to answer for me and really appreciate your time.

Thank you so much.

Answer

In this case, you should eat and drink as necessary on the fast day.
