Missed periods and staining at 49
May 18, 2017

Question

I’m 49 and I missed a period for 3 months. Then all of a sudden I started staining so I assumed I was getting a period again. I never had a flow or any bright red blood but I treated it as a period and when it cleared up I started my 7 nekiim. On the fifth day I started staining, a darkish brown… We showed to our rav and he said “kosher.” I’ve been to the mikvah but I’m continuing to stain.

My question is, should I ignore it and it’s not a problem, it’s not making me a nidah? Is there something I should be doing to clear it up? I’ve had an IUD for 4 years. Is there anything I should take on top of that to clear this up? I’ve never had staining before. It just started after those missed periods.

Answer

Some irregularity is normal at this stage of life as the cycle begins to change. However, we do recommend seeing your physician to rule out other causes of bleeding and to check in about whether the IUD is still in place, and even whether it is still necessary.

After examining you, your physician should be in position to make recommendations to address the staining. To facilitate communication with healthcare professionals in situations such as these, we recommend checking the section of our website designed for healthcare professionals,Jewish Women’s Health

Your current halachic status depends on the color of your stains, their size, and the surfaces on which they’ve been found. For more information, please see our articles on stains and toilet paper. Then please get back in touch with us with any follow up questions or details.
