Polyp removal at 66
December 29, 2018

Question

I am a woman of 66 years old and about two weeks ago I had a small operation to remove a ‘polyp’ from the lining of my womb. After that I had bleeding for about ten days. Since then I have nearly counted seven clean days thinking that I would need to go to the mikveh, even though it is many years since I did that. Am I right that I have to visit the mikveh? It seems quite hard at my age: For example, I no longer sit in baths as it is hard for me to get up from a bath, so I just shower. Will the mikveh attendant understand?

Answer

We wish you a refu’ah sheleimah!

Based on your description of the procedure, and your not having been niddah for years preceding it, we would describe your bleeding as dam makkah, blood from a wound. Blood from a wound does not make a woman niddah. You do not need to immerse in the mikveh and may resume relations when you are ready.
