Thank you for reaching out.
We are sorry to hear of your challenging situation.
While irregular bleeding is not uncommon in the
perimenopausal stage, we recommend having an ultrasound done to check for any possible
cause of the bleeding and discussing cyclical hormonal therapy to help manage the situation. You may also want to discuss other medications, such as bioflavanoids, that may help reduce bleeding. Depending on your health plan and your relationship with your doctor, you may want to pursue a second medical opinion.
It is important for your physician to be aware that, even if there is no medical concern, this type of prolonged staining has a significant impact on your quality of life.
In the meantime, we have heard anecdotally that using a menstrual cup may help shorten bleeding.
Halachically, dark brown tending to black is often a
niddah color. Still, it is worth bringing
bedikot with brown to a halachic authority for
evaluation, mentioning the length of time you are in
niddah and your difficulty in getting a clean
bedikah. You can try to complete the
clean days while staining by reducing the number of
bedikot to the
hefsek taharah, one
bedikah on day one of the clean days, one
bedikah on day seven, and preferably one on an intermediate day. You can also wear disposable pantiliners during the clean days, since stains on a
disposable pantiliner do not interrupt the clean days. Please see our pages on
stains and
toilet paper for more detailed guidance on the halachic aspects of staining.
Please feel free to get back to us with any further questions.
