Bedikah timing when sunset is late
27/05/2024

Question

Hi,

Sunset is getting very late, tonight its 8:46pm. Do I have to wait until that late in the evening to do my afternoon bedika? Whats the earliest time for that? Would doing it at 5pm be fine? Also is there a latest time for morning bedika?

Unrelated, I keep getting Friday night mikvahs. Its very annoying and inconvenient. At what point would I be allowed to push off to motzei shabbos?

Thanks

Answer

During the seven clean days, the afternoon bedikah should ideally be performed between mincha ketana and shkiah (halachic sunset). The morning bedikah ideally should be performed between netz hachama (halachic sunrise) and chatzot (halachic noon). You can check the zmanim at your location for actual times.
However, while ideally one should perform two bedikot daily, if the timing is challenging for you it is acceptable to perform one bedikah daily at any point during daylight hours.
It is preferable to immerse on time even on Friday night. But if the logistics are challenging and/or frustrating, as long as your husband agrees you may delay immersion until Motzai Shabbat.
Sometimes, a woman's natural cycle just works out with a pattern of Friday night mikveh. If you are using combined hormonal contraceptives, you can manipulate your cycle slightly to change your mikveh night (learn more here).
