Immersion with yeast infection
June 13, 2004

Question

I am supposed to go to the mikveh this Tuesday night. However, I have just developed a yeast infection. I am concerned about two things. First, I am not sure about immersing in the mikveh with the infection, both for my own health, and for the health of others using the mikveh. Second, vaginal intercourse is contraindicated for those with yeast infections, so I would not be able to have sex with my husband that night. Should I delay immersion by one or two nights? If I do, am I correct that I would need to continue doing bedikot on every day until I do immerse? Thank you!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Yeast infections are generally caused by overgrowth of yeast that is present on everyone’s body. So there is no need for concern that the infection will spread to other women, and you can prepare and immerse normally. For your own health, it is recommended to dry yourself well whenever you shower or bathe, including after mikveh immersion.

You are permitted to immerse on time even if you will not be able to have relations that night. Immersion allows you and your husband to  stop keeping the harchakot, and to engage in other forms of physical closeness aside from intercourse.

If you do delay immersion, then once the seven clean days are complete, you do not need to do any further bedikot before mikveh.
