Non-Jewish sex therapist?
17/05/2024

Question

Hi, I live in an area where there are no Jewish/religious therapists. I’m struggling in my sexual relationship with my husband and I think it’s really time for me to seek some professional guidance. I don’t feel comfortable asking a rav or speaking to really anyone I know about it. I also would like to use my insurance. Would I be allowed for me to go to non Jewish therapist who specializes in these matters. Someone who has experience with the Jewish community and is open to my hashkafic and Torah viewpoints.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
We are sorry to hear of your struggles in your sexual relationship with your husband.
We deeply value your readiness to seek professional guidance, and your concern for doing so with discretion.
It is permissible to see a non-Jewish therapist who is open to your perspective when that is the best professional available, also taking into account location and price. However, halachic questions may sometimes arise in this context, and it is important to take responsibility for seeking halachic counsel as needed.
We wish you hatzlacha moving forward. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
