One day of staining, a week before period
November 14, 2015

Question

I am 47 and have had a copper IUD for nearly six years. In the past year or so, I have had menstrual periods which begin about every 27 days, but usually begin with one day of staining (cinnamon–brown colored) on my pantiliner, followed by nothing for 5-7 days. Then a normal period lasting 5-7 days ensues. Does the pre-menstrual staining count as the onset of the period, or the commencement of bright red-colored blood? The staining this month, starting Friday (yesterday) occurred 8 days after my last period ended. This is making it very difficult to be with my husband. I would appreciate any advice. I have not sought or received psak halacha on this matter.

Answer

Staining such as you describe of any color does not make a woman niddah when found on a pantiliner. We do recommend abstaining for twenty-four hours when there is such staining, as a precaution against a flow beginning during relations. But even this is not strictly required, as the staining does not make a woman niddah. For more information on stains, please see our site's articles "Stains" and "Toilet Paper". Then please get back to us with any further questions.

You may also wish to consult your physician about your IUD, whether it is time to remove it, and if it needs be replaced. Please don't hesitate to back in touch with us about this as well.
