Sefardi/Ashkenazi differences
26/06/2024

Question

I am about to start teaching a kallah of sefardi background and wondering what the main differences are with regards to taharat hamishpacha. for example, I've learned that sefardim count a minimum of 4 days before performing a hefsek tahara, while ashkenazim count a minimum of 5 days. What are other such differences that I should be aware of before beginning to teach such a kallah?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
The difference in the minimum wait and the timing of reciting a beracha at the mikveh are probably the most prominent differences that would come up with a kallah. Others include some wedding practices and, in some cases, rulings regarding discharge on toilet paper.
It is difficult to generalize, however, because the Sefardi community is not monolithic. For example, Moroccans typically wait a minimum of five days, like Ashkenazim. We would recommend that you clarify with your kallah what communities she and her chatan come from and what Rav they plan to consult with questions. You could then be in touch with the Rav to clarify what should be emphasized in the classes, and follow up with us.
