Stain after relations
March 9, 2009

Question

Last night after being with my husband, I found a pink-brown stain on my tissue. I am 3 weeks after my period and was not expecting my period for another week now. This morning I did not have any staining. I have been off birth control (Yasmin) for nine months. What are the laws pertaining these kind of stains? Am I considered in niddah?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

If you waited at least fifteen seconds after intercourse before wiping yourself, the stain on the tissue does not make you niddah.

If you wiped yourself within fifteen seconds of intercourse, and you cannot attribute the stain to dam makkah (non-niddah bleeding, as from a cut or lesion, learn more here), then it does make you niddah. Becoming niddah right after relations is a halachically complex situation, so if this is the case, please get back to us for further guidance.

Going forward, you can review the precautions outlined here to avoid becoming niddah following relations.

Note that in general, when a woman is staining, we recommend abstaining from actual relations for about 24 hours after the staining subsides. This is a voluntary precaution against bleeding beginning during relations, and to give you time to assess the situation. Learn more here.

Please feel free to get back to us with any further questions.
