Preparation & laser hair removal for Sunday night mikveh post Tisha B’av
August 9, 2016

Question

I am scheduled for mikvah motzei Tisha b'av Sunday evening. I read your answer to the question about preparing for mikveh post Tisha b'av which suggests doing as much prior to the fast beginning. As this year is a a pushed off fast, does the same rules apply, additionally is preparing on Friday too early?

Lastly, I started laser hair removal and was planning on my second session to be before I go to mikvah, as this would be during 9 days, should I postpone and remove hair as I used to before getting married?

Answer

We recommend performing as much of the chafifah as possible on Friday, at least taking care of some time-intensive things, such as cutting nails, in order to reduce preparation time after the fast. Preparation for the mikveh is not viewed as bathing for pleasure and therefore your usual preparation routine is permitted on Friday (although not on Tisha B'Av itself). Concentrate on preparing and don't spend extra time luxuriating in the bath.

Just before immersion Sunday night, you should shower, prepare your hair, and check yourself well.

There is debate among halachic authorities about married women removing body hair during the three weeks, so it is best to check with your rabbi about this. There is no reason to distinguish laser hair removal from other methods, so if you are removing hair, you may keep the appointment.
