Septate hymen
May 7, 2021

Question

I’m 25, not married. I recently began using tampons and I’m pretty certain that I have a septate hymen. Is there any halachic problem with having it snipped by a GYN so that I can comfortably use tampons?

Answer

In this situation, it is fully permissible to have your hymen cut or removed, if it is medically indicated.

If the physician confirms that the hymen has been fully removed, then it will not be obligatory to separate after first relations if there is no bleeding.

Prior to marriage, you should inform your chatan about having undergone this procedure. The ketubah can state that you are a betulah, a virgin, but the chattan should still be aware of your medical history.
