IUD insertion before Tisha B’Av
July 15, 2026

Question

I am scheduled to have my first IUD insertion on Tuesday, July 21, which is the week of Tisha BAv. Is it an issue to get the IUD so close to Tisha BAv and during the 9 days? I have never had one before so I am unfamiliar if this counts as a procedure or not. Thank you! Tizku LMitzvot!

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.

It is halachically permissible to have an IUD inserted in the days before Tish'a B'Av. Though there is a general preference to avoid potential dangers in this time period, IUD insertion is regarded as a routine and safe procedure, and delaying it can complicate contraceptive efforts.

You should not hesitate to discuss pain relief with your physician, to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible.

To prepare from a halachic perspective, we recommend seeing our site's discussion of IUD insertion, here.
