Menstrual hygiene on Yom Kippur
11/10/2024

Question

If I am menstruating on Yom Kippur, can I open a pad/tampon to use? Can I wash my hands after? Are there guidelines to follow?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out to us.
Yes, it is permissible to open these on Yom Kippur, though not at perforated openings, and preferably avoiding tearing where there are letters. For further discussion, see Deracheha's piece on Menstruation on Shabbat, here.
On Yom Kippur, it is permissible to clean off dirt from the hands, using no more water than is necessary. If necessary for health reasons, liquid soap may be used as well.
