Tisha B’Av halachot postpartum
July 7, 2013

Question

I am, G–d willing, giving birth this week to my second child. I understand that because the birth will be within 30 days of Tisha b'av, I am exempt from fasting. What about the other halachot of Tisha b'av? Am I allowed to shower? sit on a chair? I assume I should not wear leather shoes. I may end up with a vaginal birth, but in all likelihood, I am going to have a c–section less than a week before Tisha b'av, in case that changes anything.

Answer

A woman within thirty days of childbirth is exempt from fasting.

The other halachot apply unless they cause any discomfort, at which point you will be exempt. So, for example, if you are uncomfortably dirty or sweaty without a shower or a shower might relieve some pain, you may shower. Sitting on a chair or bed will presumably be the only comfortable option. Wearing comfortable non-leather shoes would be preferable, but leather shoes may be worn if you have no others or they are distinctly more comfortable.
