Egg retrieval scheduled for Yom Kippur
September 5, 2021

Question

Please advise what to do if in the case of fertility treatment: if egg retrieval is done on day 13 of a cycle, and this day falls on Yom Kippur (a week from today), and cannot be done before or after, what is the halachically correct thing to do and best way to observe the fast and the rules of the holy day? Please help.

Answer

We appreciate the sensitive nature of this question.
Please consult your fertility specialist as soon as possible to see if retrieval can be moved a day earlier or later, or at least to the late afternoon before the fast or to the night right after the fast ends. An adjustment of this sort is usually possible at this stage of the process.
Please get back to us with any follow up questions.
